Behind the coastal strip, perched precariously on the mountainsides are the stunning pueblos blancos, white villages changed little over the centuries. A classic amongst these is Casares. Drive inland for just 15km off the main road near Estepona past olive groves and cork trees and, as you turn a bend, you suddenly come across your first spectacular view of the unspoilt and captivating Casares. This is the real Spain; a workaday village where life continues at a leisurely pace and families and friends gather together in the square in the evening for tapas and drinks. Watch eagles soar above the medieaval castle perched on top of a cliff dominating the surrounding countryside and commanding views past the Rock of Gibraltar to the Rif Mountains of North Africa; take scenic walks or go horse riding and, in this best of both worlds, when you feel like company drive down to the coast and join the 'tourists' on the beaches and in the smart shopping centres of the Costa del Sol.
