Overview of Marrakesh
Behind its twelve kilometres of red ochre walls, Morocco’s second largest city is steeped in history and intrigue. Its Mosques, fountains, palaces and legendary Djemaa-el-Fna square make it an exquisite cultural destination.
You can enjoy traditional cuisine on a restaurant patio, pamper yourself in one of the city’s many hammams, or spend an unforgettable night in one of its trendy nightclubs. To escape the hustle and bustle of the city, take an excursion to the mountains or the desert to see a different version of Marrakesh.
Marrakech’s climate is warm all year round, with temperatures reaching up to mid-30s during the summer months and dipping to mid-high 20s in spring and autumn, with winter resting around 18 degrees. This is just another reason to rent a villa in Morocco.
Things to Do in Marrakesh
Marrakesh has so much to offer from entertainment in the square to a stroll and chill-out time on the beach to venturing to the desert and mountains. We recommend seeing the different parts of Marrakech from the bustling city centre to the serene desert.
For fun and excitement, Marrakesh has a fantastic water park called the Oasiria Water Park, plus an array of restaurants for a bite to eat. Meals are traditionally flavoured with chilli, cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, saffron, cumin and berries. A favourite and traditional dish to try during your trip to Marrakech is the Tanjia Marrakshia; a tajine that is exclusive to the city. This particular tajine is made using beef, spices, smen (salted fermented butter), but what makes this dish more appealing is how it’s cooked – slow cooked over hot ashes. It’s a must-try dish.
Marrakech is bursting with history too. The architecture on the buildings is magnificent, so be sure to take some photos. The city has a variety of museums, souks to pick up a souvenir and soak up the culture, as well as beautiful gardens in the old town. Travel to the east of the city, and you will come across stunning waterfalls that are over 100 meters in height, along with the numerous oasis’ that are scattered around the region.
If you wish to venture outside of Marrakech, there are popular day excursions available including visiting Ouarzazate, the desert city which is renowned for its Taourirt Casbah and traditional Quazguita carpets. From Imlil, travellers can ride a mule to the Aremd hamlet to view Morocco’s highest mountain peak, Toubkal.
You can’t visit Morocco without going on a camel trek and Marrakech. You can experience this unique journey in the Marrakesh Palmeraie, or in the Sahara Desert – it’s a bucket list must do. Horse riding, hot air ballooning and quad biking expeditions are also available.
You can explore the Atlas Mountains and absorb the stunning views, which offers another fantastic photo opportunity. The Atlas Mountains has many small but thriving villages which are worth exploring to compare the urban Moroccan lifestyle to the rural.
The coastal town of Safi is another enticing possibility, with a magnificent Medina, old fort and beautiful beach. There is so much to do and see in this destination; you’ll want to plan your holiday, including your luxury villa in Marrakesh!
