Overview of White Villages

Casares is an iconic holiday destination, consistently ranked by travellers as one of Spain’s most charming towns. It is thought to be one of the most beautiful Pueblos Blancos (white villages) of Malaga, and it’s clear to see why.

Take a short drive inland for just 15km, off the main road near Estepona past olive groves and cork trees and, as you turn a bend, you suddenly come across your first spectacular view of the unspoilt and captivating settlement.

Behind the coastal strip, perched precariously on the mountainsides are the stunning Pueblos Blancos which have been perfectly preserved through the centuries.

This is the real Spain; a workaday village where life continues at a leisurely pace and families and friends gather together in the square in the evening for tapas and drinks. Dating back as far as prehistoric times, many civilisations have settled in this area. It’s the true Andalusia and the birthplace of its legends, anthem and flag.

Things to Do near White Villages

There’s plenty to do around the White Villages from watching eagles soar above the medieval castle, to observing views past the Rock of Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of North Africa. There’s also an abundance of scenic walks and horse-riding trails.

If you fancy a day out, it’s a short drive down to the coast where you’ll find other 'tourists' on the beaches and in the smart shopping centres of the Costa del Sol.

Another point of interest and popular attraction is the Parish Church of San Sebastian. The church is a humble yet captivating space. All the walls are painted white and a bell tower sits prominently overhead. This is the beating heart of the area and the home of Our Lady of the Rosario del Campo, the patron saint of Casares.

The Hedionda baths are in the neighbouring village of Manilva. Originally built by the Romans, nearly 2000 years ago, they contain high levels of sulphur which flow from a nearby spring. Sulphur is one of the elements essential to life – rumour has it that Julius Caesar once spent time here recovering from a serious injury. It’s the ideal place to relax and enjoy nature’s rejuvenating properties on a hot afternoon.
